Welcome TO MAPS

The area of northern Italy today has Verona and Vicenza as larger cities in the region of Veneto.  This was the base of the Scaligeri dominions and, logically, where most of their defensive network was established.   Forces to the north were generally favorable to the Scaligeri, while forces from Mantua and Milan to the west and Padua and Venice to the east had to be considered and kept in check.

MAP OF VERONA AND VICENZA

The scaligeri expanded their empire to its maxmium

Beginning in 1259 with only Verona, the Scaligeri obtained Vicenza from Padua.

Cangrande I fought for years to take Padua , a city that was fervently Guelf (siding with the pope.)  Cangrande I eventually owned these three cities, plus Treviso, Belluno, Feltre, Monselice, Bassano.  The taking of Treviso led directly to his death: it is suggested that he drank poisoned water shortly after this accomplishment while in Treviso.

His two sons continued this expansion and added Brescia, Parma, Lucca before threatened neighbors reduced the dominion back to its original size of Verona and Vicenza.
